What Wind Sites Expect: The Core Skills Covered in GWO BST in Belfast

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) practical session at Dangle Academy in Belfast, Northern Ireland

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) in Belfast

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) is designed to give you the baseline safety competence expected before you step onto a wind site. Whether you’re heading into turbine maintenance, blade work, inspections, or supporting roles on renewables projects, BST helps you understand how wind environments operate and what “safe working” looks like when you’re dealing with height, access systems, and emergency planning.

Across the course, you’ll build practical awareness around the key risks found in wind turbine work — including working at height behaviours, safe movement and positioning, manual handling in tight spaces, fire prevention and response, and first aid fundamentals. Just as importantly, you’ll learn the mindset behind wind safety: recognising hazards early, following site controls, and responding correctly if something changes.

At Dangle Academy in Belfast, we teach BST with real-world context. We focus on the details that matter on site — clear communication, correct use of PPE, and the confidence to apply safe decision-making in a controlled training environment before you ever arrive at a live turbine.

WAH & Manual Handling

Build the safe behaviours wind sites expect from day one. You’ll cover the essentials of working at height (WAH) safety and manual handling in a turbine environment — including hazard awareness, safe movement, and how to reduce strain and injury when lifting, carrying, and positioning equipment.

Fire Awareness & First Aid Essentials

Wind sites rely on fast, calm responses if something goes wrong. BST introduces fire prevention and response principles and the foundations of first aid so you understand how incidents are managed on site, what to do in an emergency, and how to support your team until help arrives.

Site Readiness & Safety Mindset

BST is about more than “passing a course” — it’s about being ready for real turbine work. You’ll learn how to think like a wind technician: following procedures, using PPE correctly, communicating clearly, and applying risk controls so you can operate safely within site rules and expectations.
