COSHH Safety Awareness Training in Belfast at Dangle Academy

Be confident working around hazardous substances. Dangle Academy’s COSHH Awareness (Half-day) course gives workers and supervisors the knowledge to recognise risks, read safety information correctly and apply effective controls - supporting compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) and related HSENI guidance.

Why COSHH Awareness Training Matters?

Exposure to hazardous substances—such as solvents, resins, paints, dusts, fumes, mists, vapours and biological agents—can cause serious short- and long-term ill health, as well as environmental harm. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) and HSENI guidance, employers must assess and control exposure, provide information/instruction/training and monitor effectiveness. This course builds the know-how to recognise hazards, interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and CLP/GHS labels, select proportionate controls (substitution, LEV, RPE/PPE), store and dispose of materials safely and plan for spills and emergencies—helping you stay compliant and keep people safe.

Identifying Hazardous Substances

Identify common hazardous substances on site, including solvents, paints, dusts and fumes. Learn to read CLP pictograms and Safety Data Sheets, spot exposure routes early and apply simple controls to reduce risk.

COSHH Responsibilities

Understand legal duties under COSHH in Northern Ireland for employers, employees and supervisors. Learn how COSHH assessments inform controls, plus record-keeping duties and when health surveillance may be required.

Spill Response & Emergencies

Gain the knowledge and confidence to respond to spills and exposure incidents. Learn how to raise the alarm, contain and clean spills safely, use appropriate PPE, and support first-aid and reporting procedures.

COSHH Awareness Training FAQs (Northern Ireland)

  • What is included in COSHH Awareness training?

COSHH Awareness covers what hazardous substances are and how exposure happens; your legal duties under the COSHH Regulations (Northern Ireland) and HSENI guidance; how to read Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and CLP/GHS labels; basics of workplace exposure limits; choosing proportionate controls (hierarchy of control, LEV, RPE/PPE); safe storage, waste and spill response; and what to do in an emergency.

  • Who should attend our COSHH Training course?

Anyone who uses, handles or may be exposed to hazardous substances—operatives, maintenance staff, cleaners, painters/coatings teams, supervisors and contractors. It’s suitable for all sectors in NI, classroom-based with no fitness requirement, and ideal for those completing or implementing COSHH assessments.

  • Is COSHH training required by law in Northern Ireland?

Yes. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland), employers must provide suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training for anyone who uses, handles or may be exposed to hazardous substances. Training should cover risks, SDS/CLP, controls, PPE/RPE and emergencies.

  • How often should COSHH training be refreshed?

There’s no fixed legal interval in Northern Ireland. Refresh whenever things change (new substances, processes, equipment or SDS), after incidents/near misses, if supervision shows gaps in competence, and as good practice about every 3 years or sooner for higher-risk roles.

  • How frequently must COSHH risk assessments be reviewed?

Assessments must be reviewed regularly and whenever they may no longer be valid—for example after process changes, exposure monitoring results, incidents or health-surveillance findings. Many NI workplaces adopt an annual review as good practice, with immediate updates when changes occur.

  • Are there legal requirements to appoint a COSHH ‘responsible person’ in NI workplaces?

You must ensure competent people plan and implement COSHH controls (Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations Northern Ireland and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations Northern Ireland. While the title isn’t prescribed, appointing a COSHH lead/co-ordinator is good practice to manage the substance inventory, SDS, COSHH assessments, chemical training, monitoring and records.
