What You’ll Learn

This course covers:
  • the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982
  • the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • incident assessment and casualty management
  • CPR and safe use of AEDs
  • recovery position and care of unconscious casualties
  • bleeding, burns, shock, choking and minor injuries
  • fractures, sprains, strains and other workplace injuries
  • medical emergencies including seizures, asthma, diabetes and anaphylaxis

This course is suitable for designated workplace first aiders, supervisors, managers and employers who need recognised first aid training for medium- to high-risk working environments.

Training Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • perform a primary survey and assess dangers, response, airway, breathing and circulation
  • deliver CPR effectively and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • place a casualty in the recovery position and monitor vital signs
  • respond to choking, bleeding, burns, shock and minor injuries
  • recognise and respond to medical emergencies including asthma, seizures and cardiac events
  • act confidently as a designated workplace first aider in real emergency situations

Course Requirements

  • No formal prerequisites
  • Learners should be physically able to take part in practical exercises such as CPR and the recovery position
  • A good understanding of spoken and written English is recommended for training and assessment

Assessment and Certification

  • Ongoing practical assessment throughout the course
  • Final practical evaluation
  • Successful delegates receive a First Aid at Work certificate, typically valid for 3 years
