What Does the First Aid at Work Course Cover?

Emergency Response Skills

Learn how to assess incidents quickly, check vital signs, and deliver immediate first aid treatment to casualties until professional help arrives.

CPR & Defibrillator Use

Gain confidence performing CPR on adults and children and practise safe use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in real-life scenarios.

Injury & Illness Managment

Develop skills in treating bleeding, burns, fractures, and medical conditions such as seizures, asthma, strokes, and heart-related emergencies.

Participant Requirements

Before enrolling, ensure you meet the essential criteria:


  • be 18 or older
  • You should be physically able to perform CPR, place casualties in the recovery position, and demonstrate first aid techniques
  • A good understanding of English is required to follow the course and complete assessments


These requirements help ensure safe participation and compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982, which set the standards for workplace first aid provision.

First Aid Certification & Assessment

Assessment

At the end of your 3-day training, you’ll complete a combination of practical demonstrations and a written assessment to show your competence in delivering workplace first aid.

Certification

On successful completion, you’ll be awarded a First Aid at Work certificate, valid for 3 years and fully compliant with HSENI regulations. Certificates are recognised across Northern Ireland.

  • What is the First Aid at Work (FAW) course?

    The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is a 3-day, Level 3 qualification designed for workplace first aiders in Northern Ireland. Delivered at Dangle Academy’s Belfast training centre, it provides the practical skills and knowledge needed to manage medical emergencies confidently and in line with HSENI regulations.

  • How long is the FAW certificate valid?

    Your First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years. To remain compliant with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982, you’ll need to complete a 2-day requalification course before it expires. If it does expire then a further full 3-day FAW course is required.

  • Who needs FAW training in Northern Ireland?

    FAW training is recommended for employers whose risk assessments identify medium to high-risk workplaces such as construction sites, factories, warehouses, and healthcare settings. It’s also suitable for organisations that need more than the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course.

  • What does the 3-day FAW course cover?

    The FAW course covers a wide range of skills, including:


    • CPR & safe use of an AED (defibrillator)
    • Managing unconscious casualties (recovery position)
    • Treating bleeding, burns, fractures, and shock
    • Responding to heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and anaphylaxis
    • Recording and reporting workplace incidents in line with RIDDOR Northern Ireland (NI) 1997 regulations, enforced by HSENI law
