This 5-day IRATA-certified Level 1 Rope Access training course is the starting point for anyone looking to begin a career in industrial rope access. Delivered at Dangle Academy’s purpose-built rope access training facility in Belfast, this course combines theory and hands-on practice to develop the core skills required to work safely and efficiently on ropes under the supervision of higher-level technicians.

Rope Access Level 1 Course Information

Rope access techniques are used in a wide range of repair, maintenance and inspection roles in industries including offshore oil and gas, renewable energy, confined spaces, power and petrochemical plants, shipping and civil sectors to name a few!

On successful completion of the course and assessment, candidates will receive internationally recognised IRATA certification, opening the door to work in industries such as offshore oil and gas, wind energy, construction, inspection, and more.

Rope Access Level 1 Training Duration

  • 5 Days (Monday - Friday) 1 Day Assesment (Saturday)

  • Daily theory sessions and structured practical training
  • Basic rescue procedures and casualty handling
  • Passing knots, deviations, and re-anchors
  • Use of back-up systems and fall prevention
  • Rope ascent and descent using approved devices
  • Basic knots and rigging systems
  • Equipment types, inspection, and safe use
  • Rope access principles and techniques
  • Work at height regulations and risk management

Attendees completing the Rope Access Level 1 Training Course will be able to demonstrate

  • How to inspect their ropes
  • Correct use of rope access equipment
  • Assist in the rigging and non-standard operations under the guidance of a higher graduate
  • Undertake a rescue involving descent by themselves and know about hauling systems
  • On the final day, candidates will be assessed by an independent IRATA Level 3 Assessor.
  • The assessment includes practical rope work, safety procedures, and knowledge checks.

Rope Access Level 1 Assessment & Certification

Successful candidates receive:

  • IRATA Level 1 Technician Certificate (valid for 3 years)
  • IRATA Logbook
  • All IRATA training is logged and recorded on the official IRATA database.

IRATA Rope Access Level 1 Course Prerequisites

  • There are no prerequisites for the Level 1 IRATA Rope Access course, however a good standard of fitness is required due to the physical aspects of this course.
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • No prior rope access experience is necessary at Level 1.
  • Basic understanding of English (written and spoken)
  • A reasonable level of mobility, strength, and coordination is essential
  • Physically fit and free from medical conditions that could affect safe working at height (a self-declaration form is required)
